How to calculate hours worked

Enter the clock-in time, the clock-out time and the break for each day. The calculator subtracts the lunch break, adds up the days of the week and shows the total in hours and minutes (08:30) and in decimal (8,50 h).

hours in the day = (clock-out − clock-in) − (break end − break start)

Example: clock-in 08:00, lunch from 12:00 to 13:00, clock-out 17:48. Day total: 9 h 48 min − 1 h = 8 h 48 min. Over five days that makes 44 h, the standard maximum weekly workload under the CLT.

How to convert hours and minutes to decimal

Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours. 8 h 48 min = 8 + 48/60 = 8,80 h. You need this format to multiply by the hourly rate when calculating pay.

Overtime

Anything beyond the contracted hours is overtime. Under the CLT, the minimum premium is 50% over the regular hourly rate (100% on Sundays and holidays when no compensatory day off is given). Enter the hourly rate and the premium to see what that amounts to in reais.

To get the hourly rate from a monthly salary, divide the salary by the monthly hours of your schedule (220 h for 44 h a week).

Shifts that go past midnight

If the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time (for example, clock-in 22:00 and clock-out 06:00), the calculator understands that the shift ran through the night and correctly adds up the 8 hours.

Minutes-to-decimal conversion table

To multiply hours by an amount in reais, convert the minutes into a fraction of an hour (minutes ÷ 60):

Minutes51015203040455055
Decimal0,080,170,250,330,500,670,750,830,92

Example: 7 h 45 min equals 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7,75 h. At R$ 12,00 per hour, the day is worth 7,75 × 12 = R$ 93,00.

How to calculate the hourly rate and overtime pay

The regular hourly rate is the salary divided by the hours in the month: 220 hours for a 44-hour week and 200 hours for a 40-hour week. With a salary of R$ 2.640 and 220 hours, the hour is worth 2640 ÷ 220 = R$ 12,00.

  • Overtime at 50%: 12 × 1,5 = R$ 18,00 per hour. Ten overtime hours earn R$ 180,00.
  • Overtime at 100% (Sundays and holidays without a compensatory day off): 12 × 2 = R$ 24,00 per hour. Ten hours earn R$ 240,00.

Regular overtime is reflected in paid weekly rest, vacation pay and the 13th-month salary. To see the effect on the 13th-month pay, use the 13th-month salary calculator and enter your average overtime; on dismissal, it is also included in the contract termination calculator.

Working hours, breaks and CLT limits

  • Standard workday: 8 hours a day and 44 a week.
  • Overtime: at most 2 per day.
  • Break: at least 1 hour for workdays longer than 6 hours and 15 minutes for workdays between 4 and 6 hours.
  • Rest between workdays: at least 11 consecutive hours.

Time bank

In a time bank (banco de horas), overtime becomes time off instead of pay. With a written individual agreement, the time off must be taken within 6 months; with a collective agreement or convention, within 1 year. If the contract ends with a positive balance, the hours are paid out on termination. Use the calculator above to add up the balance week by week.

Night-shift premium

For urban workers, work between 22h and 5h carries a minimum premium of 20% over the daytime hourly rate, and the night hour counts as 52 minutes and 30 seconds. This calculator adds up clock time; the premium and the shortened hour depend on your contract and on the collective agreement for your occupation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add up hours and minutes?

Add the hours and the minutes separately; if the minutes go past 60, turn 60 minutes into 1 hour. The calculator does this automatically for the whole week.

How do I deduct the lunch break?

Enter the time the break starts and the time it ends. The time between them is subtracted from the day’s total.

What is the standard weekly workload under the CLT?

The general limit is 8 hours a day and 44 hours a week. Some occupations have different workloads by law or by collective agreement.

How do I calculate the value of an overtime hour?

Regular hourly rate × (1 + premium). With a 50% premium, a regular hour of R$ 20 becomes R$ 30 per overtime hour.

Are my times saved?

No. The calculation is done in your browser and no data is sent or stored.

How many overtime hours can I work per day?

The CLT allows at most 2 overtime hours per day, with a minimum premium of 50% over the regular hourly rate. Some collective agreements set higher percentages.

How do I calculate the hourly rate?

Divide the monthly salary by the hours in the month: 220 for a 44-hour week or 200 for 40 hours. A salary of R$ 2.640 divided by 220 gives R$ 12,00 per hour.
