How to use the map

It is an interactive map for finding addresses and places, seeing the address of any point and finding where you are. The maps come from OpenStreetMap, a collaborative, open project.

  1. Type an address, neighborhood, city or place name in the search field (for example, "Avenida Paulista, São Paulo") and click "Search" or press Enter.
  2. The map centers on the result, places a marker and shows the full address in the box below the map.
  3. To find out the address of any point, click directly on the map. The marker moves there and the information box shows the approximate address.
  4. Click "My Location" and allow the browser to access your position to mark where you are.
  5. Once a point is marked, the link "Open route to this point in OpenStreetMap" appears. It opens, in a new tab, the OpenStreetMap site with the point already filled in as the destination; you enter the starting point there and choose the means of transport.
  6. Use the mouse wheel, the zoom buttons or the pinch gesture on a phone to zoom in and out. Drag to move the map.

Privacy and how it works

The free OpenStreetMap search service (Nominatim) accepts at most one request per second, so the page only searches when you click "Search" or press Enter (never on every key typed) and, if you repeat the action in less than a second, it asks you to wait or shows only the coordinates. This tool depends on external services. The map tiles are loaded from OpenStreetMap, the search and the address lookup are sent to Nominatim (OpenStreetMap's geocoding service), and the Leaflet library is loaded from a CDN. The text you search for and the coordinates of the points you click are sent to these services. Your location is only read if you click "My Location" and allow it in the browser; in that case, the coordinates are also sent to Nominatim to get the address. Nothing is stored by us. The page shows ads; see the Privacy Policy.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't "My Location" work?

The browser needs your permission and, in general, only allows location on secure pages (HTTPS). Check that you have not blocked access in the site settings and that the device's GPS is on.

Can I plot a route between two places?

Not inside this tool, which marks and identifies one point at a time. But with a point marked, use the "Open route to this point in OpenStreetMap" link: the destination is filled in and you enter the starting point on the OpenStreetMap site.

"Place not found" appeared. What do I do?

Rewrite the search with more information (city, state) or use a better-known name. It may also be a momentary instability of the search service; try again in a moment.

The exact location of my address is wrong.

The map is collaborative and may have inaccuracies, especially on new streets or numbering. You can improve the data by editing OpenStreetMap.

Can I use it to navigate by car?

It is not recommended. This page has no voice guidance and does not follow your trip. The route link takes you to the OpenStreetMap planner, useful for checking the way before you leave; for driving, use a dedicated navigation app.
